"What Happens When Nothing Happens : unrealised ideas from Montreal" presents Montréal based artists, reflecting specifically on the unique processes at work in the preparation of an artwork. This collaborative curatorial project aims to explore what happens in between, before, and after projects: unedited ideas, sketches, drawings, thoughts, trials, and everything in the meanwhile. The participating artists all vary in media, approaches and art practices, while their creative processes often interlace and dialogue in their shapes, mediums and forms. This project explores the realm of the artists' ideas, suspended in a time before their work is resolved and made subject to the structures of reading and power which exist outside the boundaries of the individual.
Having reunited in Göteborg whilst working at Valand School of Art , the idea to invite Montréal based artists came naturally to us as we had both previously worked in Montréal. Evolving from our collective artistic practices and thoughts, this curatorial project is enlightened primarily by our inquiry into the creative process through looking at what happens in between projects, when the notion of having a final result is especially ambiguous.

Accompanying the June 2009 exhibition of "What Happens when Nothing Happens," held at Galleri Rotor 1 in Göteborg, Sweden, is a publication in an edition of 200 that takes on the random yet fluid structure of a sketchbook.Ideas can be works of art; they are in a chain of development that may eventually
find some form. All ideas need not be made physical.
For each work of art that becomes physical there are many variations that do not.
